"Save the Kangaloon Aquifer"

This is the link to a short movie that has been produced by Save Water Alliance documenting the Sydney Catchment Authority's reckless disregard for fragile groundwater-dependent eco-systems, like Butlers Swamp, or Stockyard Swamp, on the Tourist Road in East Kangaloon.  The movie shows environmentally degraded areas that result from the SCA's 'test pumping'  and endangered species that the Catchment Authority seems to be ignoring.  The movie plays for 8 minutes.

Latham Snipe Stops Pumping

Opponents of the exploitation of the Kangaloon Aquifer received their first major victory today, with the news that the new Federal Department of Environment, Heritage & Conservation has issued the NSW Government with a stop work order on the preparation work for pumping the Aquifer.

The Myth of Sydney Being Drought Proof

As published originally in the Sydney Morning Herald,   February 9, 2006

With political lives at stake, government can't be trusted to make long-term plans writes James Woodford.

THE war on water, if Morris Iemma is to be believed, is over. In order to keep the Premier's balloon afloat some very heavy political baggage was yesterday tossed over the edge of the wicker basket. A desalination plant was discarded, as was the plan to raise the Tallowa Dam wall. Both had outraged environmentalists. Tallowa Dam was outright water theft and justifiably appalled all those who live on the Shoalhaven - most significantly in Nowra. Desalination was effectively a greenhouse gas emission factory to be built by a Government priding itself on making big noises about the threats of climate change.
